Cloud Computing is a concept that was first explained in a Wired article. It is the practice of using a virtual computer that is hosted by a service provider. The user is able to access and use this computer irrespective of where they are physically located. As long as there is an Internet connection, the user will have access to the stored information.
The Internet was the first source of what is cloud computing.
The way that the Internet works is to use a central database that contains all of your computer’s information. Whenever you make a request for information from the Internet, it is sent from one location to another until it reaches the destination server. The server will then return the information requested to the user. This is what we call a “shelf” on the Internet. The Internet may appear to be very complex, but it basically uses servers to keep track of information and deliver it to a user’s computer.
What is cloud computing to a business? Using a central store of information, your business can compile various aspects of your business data and then use that information to make decisions. The more pertinent the information is to you, the more relevant your decisions will be. It can be used for example to:
You can imagine how big this concept has become. It can even be found on your cellular phones. The Google Map application uses cloud computing to give you traffic and location information on any place in the world. No longer do you need to be at the office or be at your home to get this information. Now you can see a whole world from your phone!
With cloud computing, you no longer need to install any software on your computer. Instead, it acts as if it is your own personal server. You simply make use of a service that provides you with storage, bandwidth and memory so that you can access data and run programs.
What happens when you need to run a program?
The computer then “outsources” the work to a third party company. This company is called a cloud service provider. You choose what type of software and features you want your software to have and they provide it to you. You just download and install the program on your computer and you’re ready to go.
When you sign up for a cloud service, you’ll be billed monthly. You’ll typically be charged according to how much bandwidth you use and how much memory and hard drive space you’ve used. Usually, you’ll only pay for what you’ve used. Also, you’ll be billed at any time, day or night. In other words, no one else can use your bandwidth or drive space.
One of the most common uses for cloud services is for email
. You can use a service like Hotmail or Gmail to store all of your emails on their servers and access them from any computer. That way, you don’t need a computer of your own. Instead, you can use someone else’s if you want to, and they will never know that you don’t own the computer you’re accessing the files from.
Another example of what is cloud computing is virtualization
. Many people think that this means that your computer works like a computer in a box, meaning you can put whatever you want inside the box and it will work. Well, that’s true, but it isn’t a real computer at all. The virtual machine on a server provides the capabilities of the physical machine, and you can access the data and the applications from any computer with internet access.
Some people are confused by this, especially if they want to use cloud services that require them to use a computer of their own. If that’s the case, don’t be concerned. All that’s required is that you log on to the website of the service provider and access the files you want from there. You don’t need a computer. Once you do, you’re in business.
While many people are still uncertain about what is cloud computing, it’s important to understand it fully. By having knowledge of what it is and how it works, you’ll be able to better utilize the services it offers and you’ll have more control over what you’re using it for. For businesses, this means not only being able to save money, but also time and resources. It also means being able to take advantage of new technologies, such as the cloud. It’s a fast, easy way to get started with a technology that may be even more interesting than you originally thought.
